I've posted a new picture story about several people's experience (myself & 3 WaterTribers) when a fierce storm passed through south Florida (March 10), during the EC2011.  It was extremely fast moving and gave people very little time to prepare.  I've entitled the story: The Storm:  AI/TI in 40 knot winds, shark encounter, tethered under a capsized boat.

Hi Chekika

Great report! Some great images - It was cool to see how your sail changed from full to nothing to partial throughout the storm.

let's see if this reply works...

Keit, very interesting report. I liked the photo of the sail with the black sky in the back ground. With the approching storm Ed reefed right off and shortly after took all the sail in., probably saved our butts. I saw two waterspouts off to our left moving quickly our way, they passed by in front of us. Shortly after we were in the middle of a waterspout, the water was being picked  up around us and we were surrounded in mist, the wind was howling, The stormed passed quickly, we were going downwind at 4 and a half with no sail and just holding on. I just worked at keeping the boat pointed forward enjoying the ride. After the wind died down some, we decided to go through Whitewater Bay.

What camera do you use, mine got toasted when it got wet. I'm looking to get a good waterproof camera. Thanks again for a great report.

Hi Joe,

I took your comments and worked them into the picture-story about the storm.

I use an Olympus 720SW--one of their early "shock & waterproof" cameras.  It is about 4 yrs old, and has never been protected.  I have it tethered by a loop around my neck when I'm paddling or sailing.  I can't say anything about the newer "waterproof" Olympus models, but my old 720 has been terrific.  I've never taken any video with it.  It takes good pictures as long as you have good light.  On land, I usually use my Nikon P80 because it has a superzoom.

Yea it came fast. I did get wet and this sucks for a Kruger driver, caught me to quik to button up. Winds were the worst I have been in so far in deep water. Did as always went over or thru them. At least this time it came from the right direction. The only thing I did not like was I could not change direction due to the wind speed. My Seawind ain't to shabby in bad water but so far I think I am fearless in my Dreamcatcher.

Oh yea you  Great Lake Boys the only thing you got going for you is cold water no islands and no white sand (boring) two miles of lake Michigan and you seen all of it. I can show you sand dunes in less than a mile from the start of the EC. My pond goes around to other countries not just states. Ani't no good old boys going to paddle across my pond like they did Lake Michigan in just so many hours.

Hope this winds up you Yankees. Come kick my butt in the Tip of the Mitt. Oh yea a smart southern boy does bring help and only goes half as far as he has to. Hey you can also get shot at me in the NC if ya want to whip an old wore out southern boy.

toby .

Gee Toby . . . when did the USA annex Canada?  I could swear that Canada was a foreign country that borders Lake Huron . . . you know, one of the two Great Lakes that the Tip of the Mitt is on.

I haven't seen your name on the Tip of the Mitt roster yet either.  Them some big words for a southern boy to be tossing around with a bunch of cold water yanks.  If you ain't careful, you just might be preparing to open up a can of yankee whoop-ass that you can't ever close, This is warm water EC nor no muddy Missouri River.  These Michigan boys take their paddling real serious like. :>)

Yea my name is on the Tip of  the mitt and has been since the getgo. As always you must be able to read what is written and not just jump to conclusions. I said nothing about Lake Huron as I have not been on it. Lake Michigan I done thru three states when the water temp was 6 degrees above freezing in an event and I stand by my words. Reread my post. Also read the roster for the tip of the Mitt.

Come jump on me you cold water Yank. Paddles only or sails or both when and where. Only 300 miles or more. Rivers or open water upstream or down. Oh yea I can handle the cold better than most sissiy cold weather paddlers can handle the heat. (this ought to get good.) Lets play!

Oh ya I give my name.

If you are froggy Sun whatever I will be on the Au Sable the week after Mothers Day.

That is in Michigan the land of the short down river sprinters. Oh yea thats the river that is one of the tripple crown. Almost 120 miles. Oscoda would make a good checkpoint instead of the finsh but no way could I go that far downstream all the way with 5 portages.Do tell me how do ya all make it through Mio pond with no current. Gee I hope its warm for this southern boy and does not snow again like the last time I was there. I will be downstream of the Alcone dam come play with me. One neat thing for you Yanks your rivers only flow one way, ours goes both so they get you coming an going. I need a break so I will just float.

You want to show me you are bad paddle up the Manstee from Tippy to M72 and I will give and admitt I suck. .

Darn it!  I thought WC was getting forgetful in his old age, which would have permitted me all kinds of leeway to needle him on having to depend upon 9 other paddlers in a Voyageur (Fr) canoe to help get him to Manistee, and only doing 1/2 (albeit the toughest 1/2) of the event on Lake Michigan.

At the end of the day, he doesn't need to know my name isn't Gregg . . . all he needs to know is that it's me (BlackSun) sitting in front of the black transom that he's staring at all the way from Mackinac City to Manistee.  That is, if this old fart can make it to Mackinac City before Wed a.m. :>)
