Thread: Why not Class 2 for UFC boat switch rule?

As per the 2012 UFC rules, (which do in fact change from time to time), why limit the boat switch rule to only class 1 boats?  If you're gonna switch out boats anyway, what's the big deal?  Chief?

The switch rule looks to me to apply to the UFC only between the CPs at Fort Clinch and Cedar Key. I think the intent is you can switch at only  Fort Clinch and you can't switch back only until you get to Cedar Key.

The CFC is between the same two UFC checkpoints, therefore you've got to finish with the same boat you started in.

I misread the question. I thought it said CFC, not UFC... Another case of me adding nothing of value to the discussion. I'd delete if I could!

No problem mistermoon, it takes a man to ...... but back on track, so what do you think?  Stick Class 1 in the rules?

The boat switch rule like all rules has pros and cons. Participants in Class 4 and Class 5 have the choice to stick to one boat or switch to a Class 1 boat for the entire Stage 4. There are many class 1 boats that are skinny and fast so it isn't that restrictive. Also, you will appreciate the ability to have a downwind sail at various sections of the course (depending on the wind of course).

Classes 1, 2, and 3 cannot switch boats.

Why restrict it at all?

The boat switch rule will now allow the fastest of all boats to complete stages 1,2,3 and 5.  Why not let stage 4 be the same?

The UFC (like the EC) has become two different races done at the same time,
the fastest of sailors vs the guy/gal with their everyday boat in their garage.

Besides, Don't you want to know?  It's the big question ......
How fast can the UFC course be done?

The purpose of the boat switch rule is to allow any Class 4 or Class 5 boats that can meet our original filters to participate in the Ultimate Florida. I understand the point of the detractors that it is a bit messy. So is having two completely different courses. So is having divisions. So is having classes at all. But it would be more messy if the switch is allowed into any class. The current rule makes it the same for everyone in each class.

I really don't care how fast the UF course can be done.

I think the question is. "Why cant a class 4 or class 5 boat switch to a class 1, 2, or, 3 boat not just to a class 1 boat?

I know what the question is and it is already answered. The rule allows a switch from Class 4 or Class 5 to a Class 1 boat. That is the rule.

One more question, if you would ......

For a two person sailing team, instead of a two man class 1 boat, could it be 2 solo boats in Class1 for stage 4?

I'm just thinking that for someone with a seapearl (and crew) or such that does the ufc course they might be able to round up two solo boats easier vs somehow acquire a K2 (that they'd only use for one event).

they'd also have to carry the portage equipment/carts for both boats the entire course as well right? (all 5 stages)
