Thread: Withdrawn from 2012 UFC

With the cancellation of the CFC I no longer can qualify for the 2012 UFC so I've taken myself off the roster, and possibly any future watertribe events.  I so wanted to compete in the UFC that I even designed a boat just for that event, then the boat switch rule, then the cancelation of the CFC.  Lots of wasted time, money, effort, and missing of other events is just too much .......

I was going to give you a pass on qualifying because you had signed up for the CFC in good faith. It's up to you whether or not you get back into the UF2012 event. By the way, although the CFC was cancelled due to insufficient participation, the UF2012 won't be cancelled because I want a second chance.

If you do decide to get back into the UF2012 event, the boat switch rule still requires a Class 1 boat.

I was wondering about " the UF2012 won't be cancelled because I want a second chance. "  What's that mean ?  Please remember that I'm new to the Tribe and might not know what has gone before.  I guess I'm a bit confused as to what constitutes a sufficient number of entrants to continue the event.  8 is okay for a UFC but not for a CFC ?  And, what I'm hearing there were probably more that wanted to enter the CFC.  Of course, as the race organizer, you can do what you darn well please.  Bear in mind, though, that the rest of us poor peons do, in fact, go through a bunch to prepare for the event.  It's disconcerting to have it cancelled.  And, yeah, I can do the Tip of the Mitt but, who wants to break ice as opposed to slogging around in a nice swamp?  Enlighten me, please.   Royd

OK, you deserve a straight answer.

Things were up in air about where we were going to start and a bunch of issues so I was not surprised that we only had a few signups. So I spent some cash and went up to Fort Clinch. It was a productive trip because I got permission to launch from the park. So then I reserved three camp sites so more money out of pocket. I still needed to reserve the hotel and then there would be operating expenses, awards, shirts, graphic work, etc.

But the uncertainty was gone so I opened up payment. A couple of people dropped out. I got a couple of payments. Then nothing.

I projected ahead with $4 gas and all the expenses and I knew for sure I was going to be out of pocket for this race by a hefty amount. I am on a very limited and fixed income and could not afford to take the hit. I am still out of pocket on this one but I have at least limited the damage. It was better to shut it down as early as possible.

Also, I think the CFC is just a very hard race and only very hard core people are going to even think about it. There aren't that many crazy people even in WaterTribe to support this event. I should have known better and have learned my lesson.

So why is the UF any different? First, the UF is never going to be able to stand on its own financially. I know you all think I get rich off these events, but it ain't so. But the UF is run in conjunction with the EC so every 2 or 4 years I will see how many really hard-core crazy people want to do it. I want a second chance so my feeling is that even if nobody signs up and stays in it, I will do it no matter what. If there are a couple other crazies in there with me so much the better.
